Men and Women Retro Hairstyles
Retro hairstyles
are those that have been popular over the years and somehow still will look good on occasion. These hairstyles often were very popular in their times and are often brought back to bring back a touch of the essence of their time period. There are many beautiful retro hairstyles out there but it does take some time to find a retro hairstyle to fit many people's current hair.
Retro Hairstyles For Men
For men, there are a lot of retro hairstyles from the really funky to the really sharp to the old gangster and mobsters of the past days. Retro hairstyles often look great on guys because the change is not as significant as women's styles. Some guys prefer retro hairstyles because they look better with them than many of today's current styles. Some of the best resources for men's retro hair styles include "The Great Gatsby" and "Gattaca" which both provide different styles. The Great Gatsby offers older retro hair styles while Gattaca offers a futuristic twist to it.
Best Retro Hairstyles
The Monroe - this list would not be a list without Marilynn Monroe's signature retro hairstyle
The tie back bobs - this retro hair style is most often seen on Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, this hairstyle consists of hair that is pinned back with bobs at the sides
Short and slick - this retro hairstyle is great for women with short hair, here the hair is very flat and sleek, a ribbon or other accessory is placed to separate a few strands of the bangs from the rest of the hair creating a very chic look
Where to find retro hairstyles

Classic Hollywood Glamour for Modern Weddings and Special Events
Plus The Best Everyday Styles from the Last 75 Years
Every new fashion season now offers something new--or does it? A lot of hairstyles that are "new" today are actually re-runs of old hair fashion. Some are significant variations of old styles; whereas others are virtual copies.
In 2007 the new hairstyle trend was bob haircuts. You saw the new edgy Victoria Beckham bob, and other regular bobbed hairdos. Bobs were all the rage in the 1990s; supermodel Linda Evangelista had a bob in 1995 and in 2007. Is anything ever really new?
You may not be satisfied with the current hairstyles trends, concluding the latest haircuts don't suit you, or they look dull. Today the hairstylists around the country lack creativity, you feel.
If that's the case, you could find an inspired style for every day from a previous decade or era.
Classic haircuts
Just as there is classic clothing, there are classic hairstyles. You can look good in them at any time. They may not even look "dated." They are just that good. Hot then... hot now... how always.
Retro is hot
You may be surprised, but a lot of people still like The Rachel Haircut of 1995, and every day look online for a picture of it to take to their hairdresser. It was the hottest haircut of the 1990s, and today it's probably the hottest retro hairstyle.
Night hairstyles
Dressing up for a special occasion could make you wonder if the hairdos from another time period would look great.
Retro evening hairstyles can look just as elegant, if not more elegant than, many modern night styles. Ladies in earlier eras had a sense of elegance and refinement that is not always visible today. It came from their upbringing, in part, and their education. It wasn't just the way they dressed; it was an elegant state of mind.
The evening makes us think of glamour, but when many women think of the most memorable decade of Hollywood glamour, the first decade they think of is not the last one, or the 90s, or 80s. They are usually taken back to the 1940s and "old Hollywood glamour." And that includes retro hair styles from the glamorous 40s.
What is retro?
Here "retro" is defined as from the last century, i.e., 1900-1999. The hairstyles pictures are categorized by decade from the 1920s to the 1990s.
Retro hair styles on the red carpet
In recent years, we have occasionally seen modern stars wearing retro hairdos on the red carpet. Either they found a vintage gown they loved, and needed a suitable vintage hairstyle to go with it, or they simply decided they wanted to try something different--retro styling.
"Something old, something new"
Brides take their wedding hair seriously and often don't find perfect wedding hairstyles immediately. The "modern" looks for some are nothing to fuss over. That could lead them to go looking into the best bridal hairdos of another decade.
Other brides have a theme for their wedding that would call for a vintage hairstyle, like a retro updo.
Or they want to stick with the tradition of "something old, something new," and for the "old" part they could wear an inspired vintage wedding hair style.
Some of the ladies who visit this site and still want or need to see more ideas have found vintage books at amazon.com. Some of their books have not only pictures but also instructions, like step-by-step guides. (Not all the images are photos, however; some are drawings, but they are just as good if not better.)
If you changed your mind and actually want the latest hairstyles instead of something old, you can see a site with 2010 hairstyles for women. There are lots of new ideas there. Many girls today want the very latest modern looks; it is rare that an occasion or person wants old styles. Even for prom, retro is the choice of maybe 10% or less.
Looking ahead a little further to next year's hairstyles, get a jump on the coming trends with Hairstyles 2011 which has new pictures and information on possible direction in 2011. Clues come from salon stylists and the celebrity styles from the last seasons of this year.
Books
The top of most pages on this site has select links to the best books about vintage hairstyles from different eras. So you can check them out if you need to see more looks than you can find on this site. One of them is very popular; about 40 women have already rated it five stars. The author did a terrific job and it's great to see ladies don't have to be ripped off any more paying over $100 for what was the "only" book available on 40s hair styles.
A good source for those whose plans to wear a vintage hairstyle not in the immediate future is ebay. It has many black-and-white portraits of female stars from the Old Hollywood area. Most of them cost less than $10. But you don't even need to buy them because you can just print out the pictures.
In addition to ebay, Heritage Auctions at ha.com has many old prints. However, you have to be a member to view previous sales. The good thing, though, is when you zoom in on the pics, they are much larger, and therefore you can get a good high-resolution 8x10 printout.
Unique Vintage has vintage clothing and many of their models have vintage hairstyles from the 1920s to 1960s.
Retro prom hairstyles
One online survey showed most high school proms are very modern. Girls are looking for recent or current prom hairstyles which are less than a year old.
But the same survey also showed that nowadays some schools are more fun. They have a prom theme that is based on a decade--e.g., 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, or 1960s.
If that is your situation, and you already bought a retro prom dress, you'll also need a retro hairstyle for prom, too.
Whatever the reason or occasion--prom, wedding, special occasion, or anything else--you're welcome to look around. See if you can make the best of the past a fun part of your future.

Peyton List at the N.Y. Premiere of “Confessions of a Shopaholic”
Lots of natural curls make up this style on 10 year old Peyton List. Her stylist knows that there are some things you can do to keep these gnarls under control like allowing length to weigh it down, pulling the strands out and banding sections out of the way for style and a more kempt state.
Katherine Newton
Whether your little girl has natural curls or those you have applied, they really are a favored addition to any dress up occasion. Katherine Newton has ravishing ringlets dancing about her shoulders and a few waxed tendrils to frame her face.

Lacey Brown Hairstyle
Lacey Brown, I love the look, soulfoul voice, she's cute and I love her hair too.
Her rendition of "What a Wonderful World" from Hollywood round was great and very endearing and what a great attitude about not getting through last year. I really liked Megan Joy (who got thru instead of her) but Megan didn't quite deliver although she was good. I'm glad Lacey was given another chance this week. Some people say her hairstyle is called "The Suspicious Duchess".
The Emo Subculture
Emo, is a term which is given to the subculture of hardcore punk and pop, which originated from the Washington DC area, but which later spread like wildfire to the rest of the US and also to other parts of the world. Emo has since evolved into a musical and fashion experience which is embraced by quite a number of young adherents.
The word “Emo” actually originated from the term "emocore" which refers to the hardcore punk music scene which started in the mid-1980s. The term is a variation of the word "emotive hardcore", which is what the bands in the DC area sounded like. They have developed a unique punk-rock style of music, which blended the characteristics of the electric guitar with smooth sounded mellow tracks, which are typically screamed from the top of the lungs, hence the term emotive hardcore. Amongst the bands which pioneered this genre were groups such as One Last Wish, Embrace, Fire Party and Moss Icon.
The Emo subculture is also heavily influenced by the Indie scene, with the likes of people such as Fugazi heading off the first wave of Emo, with bands which included Far and Texas Is The Reason, which pumped Indie music into the Emo subculture.
The sound feels more like a chaotic blend of instruments laced with emotional singing which emanates deep inside the lungs. This attracts crowds of young people. Their chants and raves have become characteristic as far as Emo concerts are concerned. These concerts have in turn become some of the most vibrant in the entire rock industry.
The Emo culture is not all about music however. There are fashion statements and stereotypes associated with the Emo subculture which spread to other facets of culture. Black is considered the color of choice in the Emo universe and it permeates almost all aspects of the Emo dress code. The hair is typically dyed jet-black, and in some instances it is spiked and can contain other colors as well. For the ladies, black nail polish is also widely used. In the Emo world, make-up is utilized by both males and females.
There is now a wide range of products which cater to the needs of the Emo subculture. Cities such as Austin have fully embraced it and have great places which have an Emo theme such as restaurants, record stores and other joints. It is now common to even see special clothing lines, merchandise, toys and even TV programs and movies. Today, the Emo subculture has caught influences from both pop and rock and is beginning to be accepted as a lifestyle choice.
EMO Hairstyles
Like the emo hairsyles for girls, the guys emo hairstyles can be split into several groups - they can be subtle and non strident like Fall Out Boy's member Pete Wentz or extreme, multi colored, shaved, abundantly dyed hair as in some extreme cases.
Emo is all about showing your personality to other people and of course having an individual personality. To achieve this, the styling of your emo hairstyles must be made in a way that makes you happy and confident in yourself. The gay emo boys tend to have a more radical emo hair style, whereas the straight ones don't go so much into a variety of colours!
For guys emo hairstyles, the most common attribute is the fringe on a dark dyed hair often black or dark brown or purple in rarer cases. The fringe may either cover one of the eyes or a large part of a side of your head or face.
Other guys emo hairstyles are spiked around the back of the head and they also have a fringe at the front of the head which may give the emo guy a more gothic look.
I have mentioned in the emo hairstyles for girls section that all you need to achieve the hairstyles you want is some dye, a pair of scissors and maybe a razor. Well, it's pretty much the same for boys although some gel mousse and styling hairspray or wax may come in handy when it comes to maintaining your emo hairstyles.
To start off with, it's not easy either - people devote a large majority of their time to achieve the perfect look they are after.
Another factor which makes an emo haircut stand out is that they are not sheared by professional stylists instead anyone can style themselves! Even better is that anything goes, from long sideburns to bold short hairstyle. Guy emo hairstyles are exactly like that and that is exactly why emo boys prefer them so much!

Fall 2010 Hairstyles & Haircuts
Stores are starting to put out all the back-to-school stuff, so you know it’s time for you to start thinking about your look for the fall. Start school off with a fresh color and cut that suits your personality.
Summer blonde can last through all seasons, especially if you maintain it well. The right shampoo, conditioner and styling/finishing products can make all the difference. Use products that hydrate and protect from sun damage as well as styling and finishing products that will protect your hair from hot tools. Try to leave a day between washing if your hair is all-over color processed or heavily highlighted to give your natural oils time to permeate and protect your hair. Fall styles are less curly, but not stick straight. Take advantage of the more natural textures that are “in” which allows you to lay off the curling iron or flat iron for a while. If hair has gotten a little bleached out, tone it down a little with warmer blondes for the fall season.
For a fun alternative to the long straight style, get a shaggy shoulder length bob that you can loosely curl to dress it up. The fully inverted bob is out and instead we have longer, softer layers that give the hair body while still looking sweet and feminine. Keep the part on the side for the girl-next-door feel or part it down the middle for a more dramatic effect.
This cut looks great with richer colors, too. Spicy reds and darker browns are all flattering with this shoulder-dusting style that frames the face. Keep bangs longer to sweep across the forehead for the more romantic feel or have them blunt cut for an edgier style. To get the softness, add volumizing mousse then use a medium or large round brush when hair is mostly dry and blow it out.
Retro styles are coming back, too, so don’t be afraid of a more uniformly layered cut with lots of body. Keep curls less perfect by adding a texturizing product or combing through the curls with your fingers. They shouldn’t be quite as beachy as the summer curls, but you don’t want perfect spirals, either. Separating the curls with your fingers or twisting them around a bit helps take that perfect edge off. You can also flip your head upside down and spray with hairspray to add some volume. A medium hold hairspray should be all you need to keep this style in place while still allowing for movement.
Want to be stylin’ like Jersey Shore’s “Snooki?” Nicole Polizzi got a makeover and the new style is much softer and more flattering than the old one. The bump is toned down and the color is a fabulous rich brown that looks healthy. Her hair is smooth and straight but not severe at all. No bangs, but long layers keep the style from being over-the-top harsh. Use a leave-in conditioner and a light hold hairspray to keep hair looking soft and touchable and keep those fly away hairs in place.
Fall trends are all about color and unique styles, so don’t be afraid to express yourself through one or the other.
David Villa Faux Hawk Hairstyle
David Villa faux hawk hairstyle
Next to Christiano Ronaldo, men love David Villa, the El Guaje of team Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2010. However, they do not really fancy him as a striker. They also like him because he re-introduced a once-dead hairstyle, now more popular known as David Villa faux hawk hairstyle.

David Villa formal faux mohawk hairstyle
Faux hawk simply means faux Mohawk. It became very popular during the 1980s until newer men's hairstyles came about, and it was completely forgotten. Thanks to David Villa, the guys discovered how to be edgy without really doing much on their hair.
It is easy to achieve the same look. Like a typical Mohawk, there will be fewer hairs on the side, but shaving all of them, the side hairs are just cut shorter. The middle hair is left to be longer. This way, the wearer has the option to apply gel or wax and let them stand up, just like a typical Mohawk.
The advantage of wearing a faux hawk is that the men can easily manipulate their hair. When they want to be laid-back, they can simply comb the standing hair down, and he can appear like the boy next door again. Moreover, this hairstyle is very convenient to maintain. All a man needs is a good trim.

Mohawk Hairstyles
This mohawk hairstyle picture gallery shows how hairstyle form crosses boundaries and how adaptable it is to different lifestyles.
The majority of teens girls that choose mohawks do so as an expression of what they like and of being themselves, more so than just choosing a hairstyle for the sake of getting noticed.
Rather than just showing traditional punk mohawks, pictures were chosen to show how the basic style and lines can be modified.
Mohawks are blended into hairstyles by teen guys and girls, housewives, and by high fashion.
The Ultimate Women's Mohawk?
Although Pink and other rockers have worn some pretty great mohawks over the years, this style worn by Christina Aguilera ranks as number one on our list!
In this women's mohawk gallery you can view modifications of the mohawk, some hairstyles are to the extreme and some that just follow the line a little.
